Local news: proposed changes for skilled migration to Australia

March 2, 2017 By Zaliet

In a recently submitted report to the Australian Government, the Productivity Commission has recommended major changes which could change the way Australia chooses its migrant intake.

The recommendations include:

Reduce age limit

The Productivity Commission has recommend that the government should consider reducing the age limit for permanent migration and provider greater weight in the points-based system for younger immigrants

‘Single’ applicants should get maximum points

Applications without dependents would be given the maximum level of extra points.

Asses partners and adult children for their English-competency

Under the guidance of the commission, partners and adult children would be assessed on their English, work skills, age and education.

Almost half of visas issued under the skilled migration stream are for secondary applications, and the Productivity Commission says there’s significant scope to use those applications to raise the overall quality of the intake.
